Veterans Day: The Discipline of Service

U.S. Coast Guard members in uniform stand on a globe with the Coast Guard emblem, posed in front of a large American flag at sunset, exemplifying the Discipline of Service on Veterans Day.

The Discipline of Service

Veterans Day reminds us that true leadership begins not with the spotlight but with a commitment to serve something greater than ourselves. Whether on the battlefield or in the boardroom, leadership is rooted in discipline, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to a shared mission.

Military service instills a quiet but powerful discipline—a steadfast commitment to preparation, teamwork, and resilience amid uncertainty. Veterans understand deeply that success does not come from fleeting motivation but from systems and habits built to endure. Entrepreneurs can learn from this, recognizing that structure and discipline bring the freedom to innovate and grow sustainably.

Leadership in both arenas demands integrity: keeping your word, leading by example, and cultivating trust. Just as military precision ensures safety and effectiveness, reliable systems and consistent actions create a foundation of trust and performance in business.

Veterans teach us to show up prepared, stay calm under pressure, and uphold consistency. They shoulder the heavy responsibility of those who depend on them, reminding us that leadership is ultimately about service, empathy, and lifting others up.

Drawing inspiration from the Coast Guard, from which my husband is a veteran, our business model strives to reflect many of their principles.  True leadership means fostering integrity, encouraging teamwork, and pursuing one’s mission with unwavering commitment. Coast Guard leaders model collaborative problem-solving, adapt quickly under pressure, and treat every individual with dignity and respect. These principles guide us: serve with honor, nurture respect, and devote ourselves fully to our responsibilities—so our actions build trust, empower teams, and achieve lasting results in business as in service.

As you reflect this Veterans Day, take a moment to thank a veteran or support a local veteran organization. Let their example inspire us not only to lead but to serve with resilience, humility, and purpose.
