You’re attending a conference in Atlanta, and you meet someone who’s a perfect JV partner for a new product you want to develop. Since you’re both in the same place at the same time, you decide to stay an extra day and get a head-start on your project.
The only problem: All your notes and resources are on your desktop computer at home, and all you have is your laptop. So what do you do? Have your spouse pack the hard drive and ship it out overnight? Give up? Or sign up for a remote computer access service so the next time inspiration strikes, you’ve got all your information at your fingertips?
Remotely accessing your files and electronic data has become a necessity for busy entrepreneurs who may find themselves in a different city each day of the week – or just across town at the coffee shop. Thankfully, there are a host of options for accessing your hard drive while you’re on the road. Let’s take a look at a few here:
GotoMyPC.com
Don’t let the PC in the name fool you; GoToMyPC works with Macs, too. With its remote, secure access, you’ll never be locked out of your desktop again. Options are available for individuals and groups. Pricing is based on number of users and number of computers. Individual plans start at $14.95 per month.
BeAnywhere.com
A web-based solution allows you to access your computer from any other computer with an internet connection. You can synchronize, share, and transfer files. $9.95/month or $49.95/month, depending on plan, per computer.
Laplink.com
For flexible, secure access to your host PC from any other web browser on any device including PCs, Smartphones, Macs or even a Nintendo Wii, Laplink is your answer. There’s a free limited version, or a $49.95 full version.
LogMeIn.com
Access and back up your home or work computer from anywhere with an Internet connection, including your iPhone, iPad, or Android. A variety of options, including Ignition for iPad/iPhone or Android, Ignition for Windows, LogMeIn Free, and LogMeIn Pro. What you choose will depend on where you’re accessing from. Prices range from free to $12.20 per month per computer.
Radmin.com
If you are remotely accessing a single PC, check out Radmin (which stands for Remote ADMINistration). It provides a fast and secure access, for one low, lifetime price of $49. Note: works for Windows 7 and Windows Vista only.
With all these options – including free ones – you no longer have any excuse for not being connected whenever and wherever you are. The drawback: Your family is going to have trouble getting you to unplug and take a vacation! But just think of everything you’ll be able to get done… even from the beach. Now THAT’S productivity!
